12 Days of Cookies- Grandma’s Cut Cookies

My grandma was famous for her cut cookies. She had a huge cookie cutter collection that were hanging on the wall above her cabinets. There was every shape you could want! My favorites were always the Christmas ones because they were the ones that I have the most memories of.

Usually the week before Christmas, my grandma would make her cut cookies and I would help her decorate them. I decorated trees, stockings, Santas, reindeers, and stockings. I think there were a few others that we made, but I can’t remember them right now. Haha!

2 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon of salt
1 cup butter (cut up in to small pieces)
1 cup sifted powdered sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 teaspoons almond extract
1 teaspoon vanilla

Sift the four and salt. In a separate bowl beat the butter and powdered sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg, almond extract, and vanilla.
Stir in the flour until mixed together. I usually start to mix the dough with an electric mixer until the flour gets incorporated. Then I use my hands to continue to mix the dough until it is a solid dough. Chill for 1-2 hours. I chill mine overnight.
Divide the dough in half and roll out to 1/4 inch thick. Cut with cookie cutters of your choice. Bake at 375 degrees until lightly browned about 10 minutes.
When cool decorate with icing and sprinkles if desired.

Mr. RCGG’s favorite Christmas movie is A Christmas Story. I got him a leg lamp cookie cutter a few years ago and had to use it this year! I love how the leg lamps turned out! =)
