Dear Grandma

You never want to say goodbye to someone you love because you don’t want them to leave your life forever, but it happened to my family on Wednesday, October 27th. My grandma left this world and went on to be with her Lord! We celebrated her life on October 31st. Instead of writing a post about my grandmother, I decided to write her a thank you note for all she did for me!

Dear Grandma,
Thank you so much for being in my life! You taught me so much in my 33 years that I will never forget!

You taught me that hard work pays off. You delivered the Southern Illinoisan newspaper for seventeen years. You were up at 2:45 AM every morning to get the papers ready for delivery! Your hard work was noted a few times by the Southern Illinoisan and they made you carrier of the year several times.

One time when you were delivering the papers, you got out of your truck to deliver to a few houses. You left the truck door open and a big yellow dog jumped in the driver seat of your truck and wouldn’t move. I don’t remember how you got the dog out of your truck, but this was just one of the funny stories from those seventeen years.

Thank you for teaching me how to help others. You worked tirelessly at the community pantry, delivering Meals on Wheels, working with Vacation Bible School, church dinners, and so much more. You took me on a lot of serving trips and it really made me think about how there are some people that may not be as fortunate as others. I never thought of this as I was a child, but thank you for showing me that some people may need that extra help sometimes and that someone may not be able to get out to do the every day things.

We could never take my outgrown clothes to the pantry because when you would sort the clothes you would find something you thought I would like and it was something that I had outgrown! We started donating to Goodwill instead just so things wouldn’t come back to us!

Thank you for teaching me patience. I know that I tried your patience sometimes when I was little, but you never raised your voice to me. You always spoke in a soft tone and gave me tat look! I know I wasn’t the most well behaved child, but what kid really is perfectly behaved? Thank you for always having a patient heart with me!

I don’t know if this is a story about patience, but it is a random funny story. Before I was in school, you would baby sit me during the day while Momma and Daddy were at work. After lunch, we would go take a nap. Well, YOU would take a nap. When you were asleep, I would sneak out and go watch tv with Poppy! When your nap time was nearing an end he would go tell me to climb back in the bed. Haha! You didn’t know this until until around twenty years later!

Thank you for doughnuts on Friday mornings! That was one of the best things of my childhood and I’m going to take our children out for doughnuts every Friday morning! Even when I was able to get myself up there was still doughnut Fridays! At that point Friday morning doughnut runs had changed a bit. You went to get them and put them in our mailbox. I’ll always get a dozen doughnut holes just for you!

So as you can see you taught me so much in my life. Even if I felt like I was the grand-daughter you took for granted, the one that was always there; I knew that you really loved and cared for me! I was the one that sent  cards and gifts to let you know I was thinking of you. I was the one that called on your birthday! Towards the end you may not have remembered me, but I know you do now! You’re  in Heaven smiling down on me as you officially passes the cookie baton to me!

Thank you Grandma! I love you!

12 Days of Blogmas Day 3

I’m a little behind on my 12 days of blogmas so today I’m going to play catch up.

On the third day of blogmas The Petite Mrs. and The Coastie Couple gave to me:

I love seeing the signs of the holidays! There’s so many favorite signs of the season, but my favorites are seeing Santa at the end of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. When he makes his appearance at the end of the parade it’s officially the start of the Christmas season!

Another favorite sign of the season is all the movies that are coming on TV. I’ll go into more detail about my favorites in my day 6 post.

My most favorite sign of the season is getting out the decorations. I love decorating for Christmas because it just gives me a happy feeling. It makes any bad mood just go away!

Random Acts of Kindness

On the second day of Blogmas The Coastie Couple and The Petite Mrs. gave to me

Two Random Acts of Kindness

Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you. -Princess Diana

You don’t have to wait for the holidays to perform a random act of kindness. These can be done at any time of year! Usually around the holidays though is when people really act on trying to help others! There’s some really great ways to help even if you think it may be small! To someone else it might be something bigger.

A favorite random acts of kindness is to give a toy to Toys for Tots. This is such a simple thing to do because you can just a buy a stuffed animal and put it in the box at the front of the store. I know Dollar Tree has these boxes, but I’m not sure what other stores support Toys for Tots.

You can also choose a tag from The Salvation Army‘s Angel Tree. The Salvation Army helps people in so many ways, but Angel Tree is usually their most popular. Choosing a child’s tag from the tree gives them the feeling that there is someone out there that wants to help their family to afford a Christmas.

1 Holiday Tradition

Baking cookies with my grandma was always a favorite tradition from my childhood. We always made cookies and cut them into Santas, stars, reindeer, trees, wreaths, and stockings, My grandma would make icing and I would decorate the cookies and put sprinkles, red hots, colored sugar, and chocolate chips on them. I would always make nine reindeer. One cookie for each of Santa’s reindeer. Wight of them had chocolate chip noses and one had a red hot for a nose. You can’t have Santa’s reindeer without a Rudolph!

This year is my family’s first Christmas without my grandma and I decided that I was going to make three of her cookie recipes to honor her memory. I didn’t make the cut cookies this year, but I will soon. Here’s the first of the three cookies I made to honor my grandma this year.

Grandma’s Peanut Butter Cookies

peanut butter cookies

The first cookie recipe I made was Peanut Butter cookies. When I was little I really liked making these with my grandma. She would always let me make the crisscross pattern on them with the fork.

SDC12211Here’s what you need:
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar (packed)
1 egg
1 1/4 cup all purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt

SDC12214Mix shortening, peanut butter, sugars, and egg thoroughly.

SDC12215Blend all dry ingredients and stir into shortening mixture.

SDC12216This is usually the point where I start mixing with my hands. It makes it a lot easier to get all the little bits mixed into the dough.

SDC12217Chill dough for at least two hours or over night. It really only needs to be chilled for at least two hours.

SDC12220Roll dough into 1 1/4 inch balls and place 3 inches apart on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Flatten them with a fork dipped in flour in a crisscross pattern.

SDC12221Bake for 10-12 minutes
Makes about 3 dozen 2 1/2 inch cookies

Hair Bow Giveaway

This week, I’m giving away three seasonal hair bows that were made by my friend Dani! She started making bows after her adorable little girl Mabry was born! I’m not a huge fan of the bows that are bigger than a baby’s head and Dani doesn’t make those types of bows. Here’s the bows Dani made for me modeled by my cabbage patch baby doll, Caky Ann. (That’s Cathy Ann. I couldn’t say Cathy when I was little so Caky stuck. Haha!)

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you all take time today to stop and think about what you are thankful for this year!

Thankful

Here’s a little bit of what I’m thankful for this year:

IMG_6649
Every day I’m thankful for Mr. RCGG. He’s everything to me and I love him more and more every day! We have been through fifteen years of life together and these last three years of being his wife have been the best three years! I love traveling with him and learning more about the civil war from him! He’s an awesome daddy to Ollie and Peachy! They love him and so do I!

gae.jpg.w300h466
My grandma had a very full 89 years! She loved making quilts and baking. This is more than likely where I got my love of baking from. She truly loved serving God!She was always helping with church events and was always in her pew on Sunday morning, Sunday evening, and Wednesday night! If there was anything going on at the church you knew that she would have been there.  She loved everyone in the church and they loved her.  She had a passion for children and fostered so many children that were in need. My aunt Jo and my uncle Gary were two of those children. My grandma also delivered meals to the elderly as well as helping those in need with her devotion to the community pantry. I don’t think I ever remember her not helping others. She delivered the newspaper for many years. Even after she stopped her multiple daily routes she would still take a paper to people that didn’t get theirs.

Sixteen years ago this girl walked into my life! Even though Caryn and I are 688 miles apart and haven’t actually seen each other in eight years we are still very much best friends! In the world of Facebook and texting it’s like we have never been apart! It doesn’t seem like it’s been sixteen years. We have been through so much together and I thank God every day for bringing her dad to be the pastor at our church. He’s retiring this year and her parents are moving to Chicago, but that doesn’t mean we will stop being best friends! Every now and then I put funny best friends pictures on her facebook timeline like this one! It’s totally true too!

I love my girls! They always bring a smile to my face and will always be my kittens!

My parents for the obvious reasons of bringing me into this world. But for more than that. They love going on trips with their friends and I love seeing all the goofy pictures from them! It’s a great feeling when you can think of your parents as your friends.

Have a great Thanksgiving and enjoy your day!
