Fernandina Beach FL

Fernandina Beach Florida has the same history as Amelia Island since Fernandina Beach is the actual city on Amelia Island!

There’s pirate statues all over the town and the high school mascot is the pirate. The town has a bit of a past with pirates.

Fernandina Beach has beautiful beaches! If we don’t go to a civil war site we go to a beach! Haha!

There’s orange trees growing in downtown Fernandina Beach.

It was late January or early February when we were visiting so there’s no leaves on the trees, but the orange trees were still really cool to see in a downtown area.

Amelia Island FL

Amelia Island was named for Princess Amelia. She was the daughter o of George II of Great Britian. The island has changed hands several times throughout history. Amelia Island has had eight flags flown over it throughout its history. France, Spain, Great Britain, Patriot, Green Cross, Mexican, Confederate, and United States. I had to google Patriot and Green Cross so I linked the history of the flags.

Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield

Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield is another civil war trip. I told you a lot of these would be civil war related! =) This one is a day trip for us since it is about thirty minutes away depending on the lovely Metro Atlanta traffic.

l_90cac096830b89c8a1f8893d018782f6The Battle of Kennesaw was on June 27, 1864 and was part of the Atlanta campaign. It was launched by General Sherman against the Confederate troops of Tennessee commanded by General Johnston. The battle didn’t deliver the result of stopping Sherman’s advance on Atlanta like the Confederates wanted.

Springfield and New Salem IL

I have been to Springfield, IL many times! My dad is from the area and when I was growing up we would go visit my grandma.

There’s so much history in Springfield and it mostly revolves around President Lincoln.

Lincoln lived in Springfield before he became our 16th president.

Sheldon Church Ruins Yemassee SC

Seventeen miles from Beaufort, SC is a small town called Yemassee there’s a beautiful old church called Sheldon Church. It is in ruins, but that doesn’t take the beauty from it.

SDC11401

SDC11404Old Sheldon Church was built between the years of 1745 and 1753. In 1779 in was burned by the British, but was rebuilt in 1826. During the civil war, General Sherman burned it in his March to the Sea in 1865. The church was not rebuilt after this and was gutted to use materials to rebuild homes burned by Sherman’s troops.

It is a very popular spot for photography and weddings in the low country.

Arlington National Cemetery

Arlington National Cemetery is such an amazing place. It’s weird to say that a cemetery is a major travel destination, but it Arlington is quite the exception.

SDC11525

When we went to Gettysburg in 2013, we stopped for a night in Washington DC. That night just happened to be the Fourth of July so we watched the fireworks over the Potomac River. That was really cool! It was such an awesome feeling to be in our nation’s capital on the day we celebrated our independence.

Anyways, Arlington National Cemetery is so beautiful! Mr. RCGG and I walked a lot, but it was well worth it!
