Long Distance Friendships- Ways to Keep in Touch Without Social Media

Friendships come in many different forms and many different stages of life. You have childhood friends, high school friends, college friends, and lifelong friends.

Childhood friends are the ones you grew up with and played with after school. You may have played little league together, been in the same girl scout or boy scout troop.

High school friends are the ones that were there when you needed them. They were the ones that you had sleepovers with and went to football games with.

College friends were the ones that you partied with on the weekends. You may have been in the same sorority or fraternity, dorm roommates, classmates, etc. These friends have the potential of becoming lifelong friends.

The best kind of friend are the lifelong friends. These are the ones that start out in one stage of your life but continue to impact your life in other stages.  Lifelong friends are rare gems. They are there for you when you need them and even when you don’t need them. They just seem to know that there’s something wrong and you need to talk!

My best friend and I became friends in high school. The stage in life where you are trying to validate who you are and where you are going in life. We have had some rough times in our 20 year friendship, but we never let it get us down. We have had more joyful times than rough times in our lives! Those are the times we choose to remember! I know we will have many more to come!

Have you ever felt like someone was put in your life for a reason? That’s what happened when we became friends. We both had some major life events happen and needed that extra boost of confidence. She had just moved to a new town when her father became the new pastor at my church. The day she moved just happened to be the day after Christmas and her 16th birthday! Our youth leader decided that we would throw her a surprise birthday party! Little did she know that a lifelong friendship would start that night in her basement!

My best friend from grade school had just moved away after getting into some trouble. I had been struggling in school during sophomore year. She had ran away from home and everyone was sure that I knew where she was. I didn’t and I was tired of all the questions. She finally came back and her mom decided that it was time she go live with her dad permanently. He could always control her better. So she moved for good the summer between 10th and 11th grade. I started doing better in school and things were looking up for me in life in general.

Then on December 26, 1999 God changed my life for good! That was the day my BFF turned 16 and moved to my small town as her dad became our pastor. We were drawn to each other that night!

I had to tell you all that to actually get to this point! Haha! Don’t you love stories like that?

Anyway, my best friend and I live 963 miles away. That’s a 14 hour 35 minute drive! So, it’s safe to say that we haven’t actually seen each other in person in eleven years!
Over the years, we have learned how to keep our friendship alive. It’s so much easier with social media and texting these days than it was before though. We use Facebook to share things with each other. We text on a somewhat regular basis! Sometimes we can go days or even a couple of weeks without replying to a text thinking we already did but actually didn’t! We went eleven years without talking on the phone! She randomly called me one day in May on her way into work. It was so great to actually talk to her!

We keep our friendship alive in other ways beside social media. We have this small gift exchange called cupcake mail. We send small packages with things that we think the other one will like! We usually do bigger gifts for birthdays and Christmas. Sometimes we lose track of if we have sent something, but that doesn’t mean we have given up! Life just happens to get in the way!  Just because we don’t send every month doesn’t mean we are losing touch with each other. It just means that life happened!

Start your own Cupcake Mail:
Find a gift that reminds you of your best friend. Ours usually end up being random stuff that we find at Dollar Tree. Her husband is the manager of their Dollar Tree!
Package gift in a box with a note explaining what’s going on with this random gift! Sometimes I just put in a thinking of you card or at times no card at all!
Enjoy that you made your best friend smile! It doesn’t matter if you forget a month or two! Life tends to get busy and you don’t have time! The only times we make sure to get a package to each other is birthdays and Christmas. Her birthday happens to be the day after Christmas like I mentioned before so I just send her birthday gift with a package of Christmas gifts! Always wrapped in something other than Christmas paper of course!

So that’s how you keep a friendship going even without social media! It really is simple enough to figure out! You just have to put a little bit of effort into it! It doesn’t matter how far away you live or if you haven’t actually talked to each other in over ten years! What matters is that you and your friend are still friends after a lifetime!

How do you keep in touch with your friends?

Making a Pumpkin Topiary

It’s that time of year where your Halloween decoration and your fall decorations get mixed together! I usually go more towards the fall decorations, so  I wanted to make something that I could put on our front porch that would be appropriate for Halloween and Thanksgiving. That’s when I came up with making a pumpkin topiary. Usually my crafts are in the beginner category. I’d say this one would fall more into the intermediate crafter category! It involves using power tools so if you are not comfortable with them, then please have someone help you! Mr. RCGG helped me drill all the holes and cut the stems of the pumpkins.

Taco-tot Casserole

Tater-tot casserole is a favorite dinner in our family. It was the first thing I learned to make on my own and I have been making it since then. Over the past couple of years I have made some adaptions to the original recipe. I have used a cheese soup instead of mushroom soup, chicken instead of ground beef, and chicken enchilada soup with the chicken. Each adaption has been very good. The newest adaption I have made was a a taco version.

Tater-tot taco casserole is a lot like the original recipe in that it uses ground beef, taco seasoning, and tater tots. That is where the similarities end though. I will include the original recipe as well as the taco recipe at the bottom!

With the taco tot casserole you add enchilada sauce, black beans and green chilies to the ground beef after you drain it. Let it simmer together for about ten minutes.

Then pour it into a baking dish and add the tater tots to the top. You can arrange them in a straight line if you want but I always just let them fall and then sort of move them around until they cover the meat.

Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes or until the tater tots are done. Cover the tater tots with shredded cheese and bake just as long as it takes to melt the cheese. Usually about 10 minutes! Serve with sour cream.

See how easy that is? It was very filling and we had enough left over for us to have the next night on our leftovers night!! Haha!

What’s your favorite go to meal? I would loved to hear about it! Comment and let me know! I will share some of your suggestions on the Facebook page! =)

Coastie Couple’s Crockpot Chicken Tacos

Hey y’all! Today I’m sharing a post from a friend with you! Pam and I have exchanged posts several times! She no longer blogs at Coastie Couple though! She’s focusing more on their boys now and teaching them about things they need to know about life! She originally posted this for Cinco de Mayo recipe on Coastie Couple.

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Today, we’re bring you one of our favorite taco recipes. This recipe is easy to make and can feed large quantities of people if needed. It’s a must for a party or get together!

We’ll start with the pictures for visual learners and then I’ll share each step at the bottom as well! This recipe is the essence of a good crockpot recipe. You literally dump it all into the crockpot and wait until it’s ready for dinner!

Start by putting chicken breasts into the crockpot. We used two boneless skinless breasts but you could easily use more if needed.

Add in the rest of your ingredients – salsa and spices. You have two options when it comes to spices. You can use pre-packaged taco seasoning or you can create your own from spices you have on hand.

Make sure the breasts are well covered. I like to roll them over a few times in the crockpot to make sure that they have been coated on all sides. One small jar of salsa works well to cover two breasts. Turn the crockpot on high for 4-6 hours or on low for 6-8 hours.
When it’s time for dinner, take the chicken out and shred it with two forks. It should come apart incredibly easy.
Return the chicken to the crockpot and mix it well with the sauce. Serve the chicken with your favorite taco fixings for an enjoyable dinner.

Crockpot Chicken Tacos
Ingredients:
Boneless, skinless chicken breasts
Salsa of choice
Spices of choice (or pre-packaged taco seasoning)

Directions:
1. Determine how many chicken breasts you’ll need based on the number of mouths you’ll be feeding. You’ll need enough salsa to cover the breasts.
2. Place all ingredients in the crockpot together.
3. Set the crockpot on high for 4-6 hours or low for 6-8 hours.
4. When time is up, shred the chicken with two forks.
5. Return to crockpot and mix well.
6. Serve with your favorite taco fixings!

Until next time,

Thanks so much for sharing Pamela! I have made these several times! They are incredibly easy and so good! I cook my chicken before putting it in the crockpot! I just don’t like cooking raw meat in the same thing that will have the cooked meat in it! I don’t use packaged taco seasoning. I have been making my own for about six months. I mix cumin, cayenne pepper, chili powder, paprika, and onion powder together. It tastes and smells exactly like packaged taco seasoning. I use two tablespoons of this mixture in any taco dish I’m using.

Capital Gaines by Chip Gaines- A Book Review

Earlier this week, I finished reading Capital Gaines by Chip Gaines of HGTV’s Fixer Upper fame. I love Fixer Upper and Chip and Joanna are amazing! I had a brief period where I didn’t really like their farmhouse style. I think it was the overuse of ship lap! It seemed like everyone was doing farmhouse decor and ship lap!! I have come back to the farmhouse style but I have tweaked it to my own tastes. I have added some coastal charm to our farmhouse decor. I won’t be using any ship lap just in case you were wondering! Haha! I’ll share a home tour with you very soon! You can subscribe to my monthly newsletter to see sneak peeks of our home decor!

Anyway, back to my review of Capital Gaines. Chip always strives to do the best he possibly can. He explains that even though he may go about it in a way that would make others cringe, he embraces it and jumps head first into it!

He talks about how he started so many different business before FINALLY starting Magnolia with Joanna! They went through so many financial struggles while building their business! Chip says that he isn’t that great at budgeting and he is so thankful and blessed that Jo Jo is! They have been through some pretty rough times where they literally did not have any money! You never would guess this since they have gained so much fame with their Fixer Upper show!

Chip and Joanna are probably the most humble celebrities though! They have never let the fame get to their heads! They always give the credit of their success to God! They may be famous but they still live their before fame lives of flipping houses! They have just added to their work with the stores and everything in downtown Waco Texas.

Capital Gaines was a good book! It showed how Chip overcame his failures to create his successes by jumping into it!

Have you read Capital Gaines? What did you think? Have you read Magnolia Story by Joanna and Chip Gaines? I’ll do a review of that one at a later point! It was a great book!

Fourth of July Wooden Firecrackers

I love having something on our front porch for different times of the year. For Halloween I have these cute little black cats. For Thanksgiving I made a pumpkin topiary. I needed something for the summer so I made some wooden firecrackers!

Mr. RCGG had to help me cut the wood to the sizes I wanted. Then I spray painted them white. I put painters tape around two pieces of wood and sprayed them red and blue. When I took the tape off the white was still visible making a design.

After I was sure that everything was dry, I glued the pieces together. I also glued a piece of string to the top of each one for a fuse. I wanted them to actually look like a fuse and stand up though! I took some black washi tape and wrapped it around the string.

I had a piece of wood left over so I glued the fireworks to it as a base! They weren’t staying like I wanted so Mr. RCGG drilled them to the base! I glued the fuses to the top!

It needed something along the bottom so we went to Hobby Lobby and got the letters. While spraying them I realized I was running out of white spray paint and only had enough to cover the U. So I sprayed the other two letters red and blue! I love how this turned out! I think it is one of my favorite crafts I have made in a while!

Creamed Corn AKA Jeni’s Corn

Summer is upon us and all those BBQ invitations are going to start pouring in soon! You will have to take a side dish to share, but have no idea what to take! You don’t want to slave in the kitchen all day before the party so it will have to be something quick and easy! this homemade creamed corn is just that! It is fast and comes together so easily that you will have time to sit and relax before getting ready! Haha!

Jeni’s Corn, as this creamed corn has come to be known by, is originally made by an amazing friend from my home church in Illinois. Jeni has been making it for years and would bring it to any potluck, funeral dinner, and just about any other event. It just wasn’t a church dinner without Jeni’s corn.

Here’s how to make Jeni’s Corn:

Ingredients:
1 medium bag frozen corn
1 block of cream cheese
1/2 stick of butter
3 Tablespoons water
3 Tablespoons sugar

Put the corn in a crock pot. Cut the cream cheese and butter into pieces and add to the corn. Add the water and sugar. Turn your crock pot on low for four hours making sure to stir every couple of hours.

See how easy it is? I made it for dinner one night last month with steak and diced potatoes. We had gotten home around 4 PM from running errands and I put it in the crock pot on high instead of low. I still let it cook for the four hours and it was so good! Creamy and buttery!

Jeni’s Corn has been a favorite for as long as I can remember and I’m sure it will become a favorite in your house too!

Do you have someone in your church that has become known for making one dish? I’d love to hear about it! Leave a comment or share it on the Facebook page!
